In 1984, Steve and his wife Deborah went to Manila for a 2 week mission trip that turned into over 25 years. They planted a church that has now grown from 165 students to 39,000 members.

Efren was named CNN Hero of the Year in 2009, becoming the first ever Filipino to receive such recognition. This award was for his advocacy to educate Filipino out-of-school youth through "pushcart classes," which teach English, Math, and personal hygiene to underprivileged kids. Efren began this advocacy with a team of volunteers through the Dynamic Teen Company, which he founded when he was just sixteen years old.

His life turned into a new direction when he met Christ, propelling him to begin a work called "Love-N-Care Ministries International", devoted to helping the poorest of the poor, evangelism, church planting, and revival.
