Help for the victims of Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar

myanmar cyclone devastationWe have now started accepting donations for “Myanmar Relief” on the Every Nation website – here is a summary of the current situation and how we can help:

Current Situation

Myanmar (formerly known as Burma), took a direct hit from Cyclone Nargis on May 2 & 3, leaving an estimated 100,000 dead and up to 1 million at further risk due to lack of safe drinking water, food, shelter and medical assistance. Our church has about 70-80 members, all of whom are accounted for. Our pastor told us the heartbreaking story of one young woman from our church who lost 15 members of her family in the storm.

Here is the latest report from our pastor in Myanmar:

“The church went to Kun Gyan Gon (one of the hard hit place) on May 19 with the offerings we got on the previous Sunday. We were about 24. We could bless one whole village. They were about 50 people. The church members also went to Nargis Victims ( Orphans ), some of them are affected WITH hiv POSITIVE in North Dagon. There are about 17 children. And we could bless them some money (50,000 Ks = $ 50) and a sag of rice and some clothes, donated by students and friends. We were about 26.

Future Plans are to visit the Nargis Victims plus orphans who live in and around the Yangon areas. Also, to co-orperate with people living in the areas of the cyclone hit, and send them help and assist their needs from Yangon. We plan to visit those places by monthly basis. While we are showing our love and compassion to the poor and needy in action, we are also building relationship with students those who are going with us.

So these are some plans that we could think of right now. Please share this concern with friends and prayer for us. We are looking forward to get more aids to bring to these victims.”

There are accounts of literally thousands upon thousands of dead bodies everywhere, raising the possibility of a further outbreak of disease. There is no power and it is estimated that it may take as long as 3 months for electricity to be completely restored. The people do not have access to clean water. As a result, people are getting sick from drinking pond water. Tens of thousands of victims have no access to medicine or doctors. With no fresh supplies being delivered to the cities, prices of all basic commodities such as food, gas and medicine have skyrocketed.

How We Can Help

We want to do everything we possibly can to help our church and the people of Myanmar. Our goal is to be able to send donations which will allow our church to work together with local agencies to distribute medicine, food and water to the victims of this devastating storm.
