Myanmar Update

It was a mere 7 day mission trip but Doc Gen felt she has known the people of Myanmar for years.

Doc Gen is one of the six Filipinos who went to Myanmar from June 21-27 as part of Every Nation medical and relief mission to help the people affected by Cyclone Nargis - one of the most devastating calamities to hit the nation of Myanmar in over a century.

Nargis wiped out the homes of over 2 million people and left a massive death toll. Tens of thousands of people have died, and with its aftermath, the number of casualties continues to rise.

The mission team leader to Myanmar, Pastor Jonathan Bocobo, reports, “After the cyclone, more people die of hunger, thirst and diseases. The lack of government support makes the situation worse.  Some corpses are rotting in the streets. In one of the villages, there was a dead woman still hugging a coconut tree, and no one bothers to remove the body from the tree. There are corpses in the water ponds which the people use as drinking water.”

The Military Junta of Myanmar has been restricting international aid workers from entering the country but God gave favor to the Filipino team. Being granted visas is a miracle in its own right as so many organizations who applied were denied visas. One bright idea after another was another favor.

Doc Gen shares, “Since the medical team was not allowed to leave Yangon, we were forced to be creative. We set up a station where people can go to us. We had to explain preventive health to people who don't speak a word of English.”
