The Living Room

by Michael Jones

Montreal is a beautiful, international city with a European feel. It is and urban city with 3.6 million people. The predominant language is French, however most are at least bilingual with English. Montreal is known for its arts community, restaurants, old world architecture, Cirque de Soleil, hockey and (known as the fourth member of the trinity) Celine Dion.

Montreal has the most university students per capita in North America. It also has the third highest suicide rate in the world. It leads Canada in abortion, depression and divorce. Not surprisingly Montreal is the least churched city in North America.

Small Discussion Groups

Our community was born out of some small discussion groups in the fall of 2006. By early 2007 we began meetings in our living room, and by late summer we outgrew it. A door was opened to have a space at Concordia University in downtown Montreal, where several in our community go to school. Since then we meet each Sunday night at the university bar. The name of our church is The Living Room.

The Living Room is not a place you go, we’re a community that encourages relationship with God, with each other, and with the world- no matter where we are or what day of the week it is.

Sixteen nations are represented in our group of about fifty people. We are from many backgrounds, generations and economic brackets.

On any given Sunday night you may find an atheist, a Muslim, a recovering heroin addict, a current alcoholic, and Christians together. Jesus has a way of erasing all of these labels and categories as he draws people to Himself. The unity is tangible.

Missions and Beyond

This summer of 2008, our first mission trip included nine people. We went to the island of Tobago where we served the people of several towns. Our initiatives included a vacation bible school for kids and meeting with leaders to lay the foundations for a Christ centered recovery program for alcoholics.

We are currently serving Montreal with the following new initiatives being led by members of our church: an outreach to the business community, a mentor based recovery program and our continuing presence at Concordia University led by our campus minister, Allaina van Reeuwyk.
